Morning Routine-(Daily Language, Daily Math, and Number of the Day)

Each morning, the morning routine is just that ROUTINE. It begins with students entering the classroom, unpacking, and beginning their "morning work" before the news show and announcements. I LOVE Evan Moor's Daily Language Review and Daily Math Review. I have these copied with language and math on one page. I also have made transparencies for discussions, teachable moments, and review. The students love this because they also get to use a "green grading pen". So cool! Upon completing Daily Language and Daily Math, students also do what we call Number of the Day on the back. Here is what the Number of the Day consists of:

Heart Smart and Art

We learned ways to keep our heart healthy. We read two nonfiction books and had a discussion about , exercising, eating healthy, and the importance of rest. We also watched a movie starring Slim Goodbody using Discovery Education. The students also exercised. We discussed pulse points, clogged arteries, heart attacks, heart surgery, and the importance of playing outside to keep our hearts healthy. Then, we made these cute hearts and wrote ways to stay Heart Smart. In the midst of it all, there was a teaching moment using the inflection ending -ing.

Abraham Lincoln

We learned about Abraham Lincoln and made these cute Lincoln's through following directions and using spatial "sense".

Robert Munsch

My class will begin an author study on Robert Munsch tomorrow. I am beginning with the book, Love You Forever. I love sharing (reading/singing) this book with my students each Valentine's.
If you visit, http://robertmunsch.com/love-you-forever/ ,you can also have Robert Munsch read the book aloud. (This option available for most of his books.) I will do this with other books this week. My kids will love it!

Valentine's, Friendship, and Family

This week we are going to celebrate Valentine's Day for the entire week. You are probably thinking that I have gone crazy! We are going to discuss friendship and family. I will post pics tomorrow of my students Valentine holders that they create with their family. They always turn out so cute.

More bears pics

Bears HIbernating

During our unit on Winter Animals, we discussed the difference in hibernation and migration. We discovered that lots of animals hibernate. One student kept pondering and asking questions as to how and why pet turtles know to hibernate. Inquiring minds (the student and I searched and found our answer via the internet and its relation to being cold-blooded) kept me busy and eagerily looking for an answer. Here is a picture of some bear caves we made and polar bears we sculpted from white clay.

Thank You!

It has taken me a while to figure out how to upload documents. I finally resolved the issue and verified my account. (HA!HA!) Then, my friend and colleague, Kathy Law showed me how to finish an upload and make a link to my page. She not only helped me complete the upload, but has been an inspiration to starting my own blog. Thank you, Ms. Law.

Be sure to check out Ms. Law's blog at http://firstgradealacarte.blogspot.com/
